Through experience, I\u2019ve learned to run through a simple tool control checklist. I look for the following items for tool room management:<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-documentation\">1. Documentation<\/h2><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"suggested_container\">\n<p class=\"suggested_title\">Suggested Resources<\/p>\n<p>Check out our articles on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fodcontrol.com\/what-is-fod\/\">What is FOD?<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fodcontrol.com\/setting-up-a-company-fod-program\/\">How to Set Up a FOD Program<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is guidance posted?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are forms properly filled out for each toolbox?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are tools accounted for?<\/li>\n\n<li>Was the box properly checked in and out?<\/li>\n\n<li>Where\u2019s the box or individual tool that is missing?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are calibrated tools such as torque wrenches current?<\/li>\n\n<li>What happened to the broken ones?<\/li>\n\n<li>Who has the CTK that isn\u2019t in the tool room?<\/li>\n\n<li>If I go and look for it, will it be with the one who supposedly has it?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are all lost items properly looked for? Documented? Tools Identified<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is every tool in the kit identified for that kit?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is every tool singly identified (no double etching)?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do identical tools such as torque wrenches that are stored together in a kit have a&nbsp;<em>home?&nbsp;<\/em>For instance, if five torque wrenches are all removed together, do you know which one goes in each spot in the drawer?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are tiny items such as drill bits stored in a larger container so that they can be kept together as a group?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is the larger container or sub-tray specifically identified for that kit?<\/li>\n\n<li>How are your rags controlled? Do you count them out and count them back in again?<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Tools Clean and Serviceable?<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pick each one up.<\/li>\n\n<li>Are the kit and kit contents dry?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are they free of corrosion?<\/li>\n\n<li>Free of excessive oil and grease?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are there any foreign objects in the box underneath where the tool lay?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are there any foreign objects under the toolkit foam?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is the toolkit interior and exterior in good repair?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is the padlock on a lanyard?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is the padlock etched?<\/li>\n\n<li>Does each toolkit have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fodcontrol.com\/product-category\/fod-bags\/\">FOD bag<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fodcontrol.com\/product-category\/fod-cans\/\">FOD can<\/a>?<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Test Equipment<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is it current in calibration?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are accessories identified for that item?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do individual training records document certification on high cost or special test equipment?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are all items properly stored?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are all items accounted for?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is there a calibration schedule for all test equipment items?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is there an equipment brochure available?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are handles, knobs, dials and viewing surfaces tight and clean?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are all screws, bolts, fasteners and general hardware accounted for?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are power cords and adapters in serviceable condition?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are batteries free of corrosion? Leadership<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do managers and supervisors periodically visit and help inspect the tool room and equipment checklists?<\/li>\n\n<li>When it gets busy, do toolkit check-ins and check-outs become top priority for&nbsp;<em>everyone&nbsp;<\/em>in the tool room?<\/li>\n\n<li>Is guidance and policy directed from the top down? Is there a good feedback process from the most junior member of the team back up to leadership?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do supervisors reward top performers? Do they guide and lead by example?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do supervisors assess their own toolkits regularly?<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Quality Assurance<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Does your QA inspect the tool room each month?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are they fair in their assessments?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do they share trend information with tool room personnel?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do they spend time to teach and train?<\/li>\n\n<li>When they walk into the tool room, do people fear their tread? (I hope not.)<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Individual Tool Items<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are all separate items marked?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are they checked in with the same care as a small toolkit?<\/li>\n\n<li>Does each have a clearly marked&nbsp;<em>home?<\/em><\/li>\n\n<li>Are all the holders, racks and shadowed spots inventoried before the off-going shift is released from duty?<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Bench and Operating Stock<\/h2><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Is the exact number of needed items counted out before they are handed over the counter?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do technicians and mechanics have free access to bench stock?<\/li>\n\n<li>Should you expect the old items back?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do you trade an old bolt for a new one? Should you?<\/li>\n\n<li>Are similar containers of liquid clearly marked so you don\u2019t hand out the wrong stuff?<\/li>\n\n<li>If what the customer is asking for doesn\u2019t sound right, do you question it?<\/li>\n\n<li>If you hand out disposable brushes, sponges, paper and such do you know where they all went?<\/li>\n\n<li>Should you be asking for them back?<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9.
